Canada Express Entry 2026 Update: New Categories for Skilled Workers Announced
The Government of Canada has announced major updates to its immigration system, focusing on attracting highly skilled professionals to support the country’s economy.
As global competition for skilled workers increases, Canada is strengthening its immigration strategy under the International Talent Attraction Strategy. The goal is to maintain sustainable immigration levels while ensuring businesses can fill critical labour shortages.
The Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, revealed the new 2026 category-based selections under the Express Entry system. These updates will allow Canada to invite candidates with specific skills and Canadian work experience in priority sectors.
🔹 New 2026 Express Entry Categories
In 2026, Canada will introduce the following new categories:
- Foreign medical doctors with Canadian work experience
- Researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience
- Transport occupations, including pilots, aircraft mechanics, and inspectors
- Highly skilled foreign military applicants recruited by the Canadian Armed Forces, such as military doctors, nurses, and pilots
These categories aim to strengthen Canada’s workforce in healthcare, research, aviation, transportation, and defense sectors.
🔹 Continued Priority Categories (From 2025)
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will also continue invitation rounds for:
- Candidates with strong French language skills
- Professionals in health care and social services, including nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, and chiropractors
- Skilled trades workers, such as carpenters, plumbers, and machinists
What This Means for Applicants
The 2026 Express Entry updates reflect Canada’s strategy to prioritize high-demand occupations and candidates with Canadian work experience. For skilled professionals—especially in healthcare, research, aviation, trades, and military roles—this presents strong permanent residency opportunities.
